Camp Nelson Bridge : The Camp Nelson Bridge over the Kentucky River at the Garrard – Jessamine County line is likely the best known of all of Kentucky’s covered bridges. The double barrel span was built in 1838 by Lewis Wernwag. At 240’ it was the longest single span wooden bridge in the world. During the Civil War the bridge was considered so important as one of only two highway bridges over the Kentucky River that a company of Union soldiers from the nearby army post were stationed at either end of the bridge to protect it from sabotage.
After nearly ninety years of continuous service, a heavily loaded truck from Lexington broke through one of the floorboards that had rotted due to a leaky roof. After being closed to traffic in 1926 efforts were made in vain to save the bridge. Lewis Wernwag’s Bluegrass masterpiece was intentionally collapsed during demolition on October 19, 1933.

Ruddles Mill Bridge : The Ruddles Mill Bridge crossed Stoner Creek in the tiny town of Ruddles Mill in Bourbon County on what is today known as Ky Highway 1940. It stood from 1861 until it was lost to arson on August 11, 1964. The bridge was 150 feet long.
In a 1953 Courier Journal article, it was said that some local boys would have "mock hangings" in the bridge to scare motorists traveling through the bridge.
The bridge was burned just two days after funding was approved for its restoration. Locals recall seeing a light colored car of teenage boys heading towards the bridge shortly before the fire. Three off duty firemen were injured when they lost control of their truck on the way to the fire.
A concrete bridge now stands in this bridge's place.

Cynthiana Bridge : Cynthiana's covered bridge carried traffic across South Fork of the Licking River from 1838 until 1944.
The 220’ three span Burr arch truss was built by Greenup Remington from plans reportedly drawn by Lewis Wernwag. It was closed in 1944 due to being declared inadequate by the Kentucky Highway Department and then Harrison County officials decided to build a new bridge. The bridge had been closed to traffic for two years before the roof, siding and floor were removed and the un-housed trusses then stood until they were pushed into the South Licking in December 1948. On Wednesday December 18, 1946, a 1936 Ford Coach carrying two teenage girls and four men attempted to cross the floorless bridge. Both young ladies and one of the men were killed in the crash or were drowned. A fourth occupant died the following evening in the hospital.
The bridge was removed little by little starting in 1946 and ending in the summer of 1948.

Lair Bridge : This 270’ Howe truss was built by John & Matthias (sic) Lair and T. J. Megibben in 1871 over the South Licking River. On July 11, 1946, Harrison County Judge-Executive W. E. Boswell and County Engineer W. H. Criswell inspected the old bridge and posted it condemned; thirty MINUTES later, the north span collapsed. Days later the collapsed section of the bridge burned reportedly due to a carelessly discarded cigarette. The remaining section of the bridge was later removed to facilitate the construction of its replacement span.
